Halifax, N.S.—After constructing three libraries, securing the creation of an iconic central library building, and leading an amalgamated library system into a new era of services, Judith Hare, Chief Executive Officer of the Halifax Public Libraries, announced to the Halifax Regional Library Board on Monday, May 27 her retirement effective September 30, 2013.

“It has been a great honour to lead the Library system in Halifax,” says Judith Hare. “I have had the pleasure of overseeing the development of new services, technologies, and facilities that respond to community needs.” Hare has devoted her entire 40 year career to working in and managing public libraries. She began as a librarian in the Ontario system in 1973 and joined the Halifax Public Libraries when the three systems amalgamated in 1996.

"I am and will always be dedicated to the Library," says Hare. "Now, with the Central Library under construction and on target, the time is right for me to take on new projects. The Library is well positioned to continue moving forward and achieve new successes.”

Hare is not coming to a full stop. She has been named by the Royal Society of Canada to an expert panel. Its tasks will be to examine the status and future of libraries and archives in Canada and to write a report, which will be published in November of 2014. Consultations will be held in Halifax and across Canada to gather input.

“The Board has been fortunate to have a world-class librarian leading our library system for 17 years,” says Philip Moscovitch, Chair of the Halifax Regional Library Board. “During a time when public libraries have been changing dramatically, the Halifax Public Libraries has managed to adapt and remain relevant to the needs of our communities. This level of agility within a large system is not easy. It has taken a connected staff and bold leadership to make it happen. On behalf of the Board, I wish Judith Hare all the best in her professional and personal pursuits. We are very thankful for her dedicated service.”
