FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Wednesday 12 November 2014

Halifax, NS–One of the most popular questions coming from Halifax citizens and nationwide library fans—“When is Halifax’s new library opening?”—has now been answered. Today, Halifax Public Libraries announced the opening date for Halifax Central Library to be Saturday, December 13.

“This is a joyous day for everyone,” said Åsa Kachan, CEO/Chief Librarian for Halifax Public Libraries. “Today, citizens who have been walking by, watching the progress of their new Library, can start making plans. Our Library teams, who have been working incredibly hard to bring us to this point, are excited to be soon inviting the community through the doors to share in this beautiful library. December 13 is going to be a festive and historic day that Halifax will not forget for years to come.”

“We invite you to play your part in making the launch of Halifax Central Library something in which we can all share pride,” said Bruce Gorman, Director of Central Library and Regional Services. “Our Share the Wow capital fundraising campaign is still underway and we are seeking more financial donations. That is most urgent.”

The Halifax Public Libraries has committed to raise funds toward Halifax Central Library and the public’s help is needed. The campaign has reached 72% of its $6.4 million goal, with the current focus on ensuring a new and extensive collection of materials that can meet the increased borrowing anticipated after opening.
